Enhanced personal autostereoscopic telepresence system using commodity depth cameras

چکیده
This paper describes an enhanced telepresence system that offers fully dynamic, real-time 3D scene capture and continuousviewpoint, head-tracked stereo 3D display without requiring the user to wear any tracking or viewing apparatus. We present a complete software and hardware framework for implementing the system, which is based on an array of commodity Microsoft KinectTMcolor-plus-depth cameras. Contributions include an algorithm for merging data between multiple depth cameras and techniques for automatic color calibration and preserving stereo quality even with low rendering rates. Also presented is a solution to the problem of interference that occurs between Kinect cameras with overlapping views. Emphasis is placed on a fully GPUaccelerated data processing and rendering pipeline that can apply hole filling, smoothing, data merger, surface generation, and color correction at rates of up to 200 million triangles/sec on a single PC and graphics board. Also presented is a Kinect-based markerless tracking system that combines 2D eye recognition with depth information to allow head-tracked stereo views to be rendered for a parallax barrier autostereoscopic display. Enhancements in calibration, filtering, and data merger were made to improve image quality over a previous version of the system.

Immersive Autostereoscopic Telepresence
A major shortcoming of traditional videoconferencing systems is that they present the user with a flat image of the other participants on a screen, while in real life, our binocular visual system gives us a three-dimensional view of the persons we are interacting with. Other common problems impairing the realism and usability of interpersonal video communication include lack of eye contact and ...
متن کاملFreeCam: A Hybrid Camera System for Interactive Free-Viewpoint Video
We describe FreeCam a system capable of generating live free-viewpoint video by simulating the output of a virtual camera moving through a dynamic scene. The FreeCam sensing hardware consists of a small number of static color video cameras and state-of-the-art Kinect depth sensors, and the FreeCam software uses a number of advanced GPU processing and rendering techniques to seamlessly merge the...
متن کاملThe Use of Enhanced Depth Information in Telepresence
This thesis explored the potential performance benefits of enhancing depth cues in telepresence interfaces. A series of experiments addressed the role of binocular disparity and motion parallax in teleoperators’ performance. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated that the effects of enhancing binocular disparity and motion parallax depend upon the information demands of a given task. Enhanced depth c...
متن کاملAugmented Reality with Autostereoscopic Visualization - A Comparative Study using an Autostereoscopic Display versus a Common Display
In this paper, we present a system that combines Augmented Reality and autostereoscopic visualization. We also report a study for comparing different aspects using an autostereoscopic display and a common display, in which 44 children aged from 8 to 10 years old have participated. From our study, statistically significant differences were found between both displays for the depth perception and...
متن کاملA First Look at a Telepresence System with Room-Sized Real-Time 3D Capture and Life-Sized Tracked Display Wall
This paper provides a first look at a telepresence system offering room-sized, fully dynamic real-time 3D scene capture and continuous-viewpoint head-tracked display on a life-sized tiled display wall. The system is an expansion of a previous system, based an array of commodity depth sensors. We describe adjustments and improvements made to camera calibration, sensor data processing, data merge...
